PSO: When and where did you compete?

Jessica Marie: 2017 PSO Northeast

PSO: What was your inspiration or story behind your piece?

Jessica Marie: When I was a competitive dancer as a child and young adult, my teacher always put me in the Entertainment category for routines because she knew that sassiness and hamming it up onstage were my strengths. When I first started pole, I never imagined that I would eventually compete, but something finally clicked in me and I got the performance bug again. Pole made me want to dance again, and I wanted to choose a super fun, entertaining, and upbeat song that I thought everyone in the audience would enjoy: "Supermodel (You Better Work)" by RuPaul! It was a great throwback beat, and it was impossible not to smile throughout the whole routine (even when I thought I couldn't get through to the next move!). I will always cherish this first pole competition, not just because I won my category, but because it represented my absolute devotion to pole as an art form and solidified my vow to never stop dancing.

PSO: What would you like to share about your PSO competition experience?

Jessica Marie: Even though I had performed onstage as a dancer my entire life, and I was confident in my routine, I was SO nervous to perform in my first-ever pole competition at PSO NEPC 2017! But once I walked out on that stage and my music began, I felt so supported and loved by the audience, my fellow performers, and of course my own studio family for three glorious minutes, and I totally fell in love with performing all over again. It was incredible to be surrounded by so much talent and so much pure joy for pole in one room! While I took home the gold that day, I am most grateful for the experience of competing and am so proud of myself for continuing to rise to the challenge of higher levels, more advanced tricks, and even a doubles routine with a partner last year! Pole is a huge part of my life today and I honestly don't know where I would be without it. Thank you, PSO!
