PSO: When and where did you compete?
Phoenix James: 2019 Atlantic Pole Championships
PSO: What was your inspiration or story behind your piece?
Phoenix James: My daughter has struggled with mental illness and suicidal ideation since she was six, and that year had been particularly hard. She knew her thoughts weren’t normal, but she couldn’t stand suffering with her feelings and didn’t want to live because she felt like no one understood her. I find this is a very common theme within the mental health community, and I wanted to do a piece to honor her, her strength, the strength of others likewise afflicted and continue to fight the stigma and remind people that they are not alone. Addendum: my daughter is a healthy, happy twelve-year-old now, has survived three hospitalizations, multiple suicide attempts and intense bullying, and even though the hard days still come, she’s still here and still fighting and encouraging others to not give up.
